Lake Attersee, nestled in the picturesque Upper Austrian Salzkammergut region, is a real paradise for hikers and mountain sports enthusiasts. This is because the region offers an impressive variety of hiking and mountain sports options, suitable for gentle hikers and experienced mountaineers alike. The unique beauty of the landscape, combined with well-marked trails and numerous refreshment stops, make Lake Attersee an ideal destination for mountain enthusiasts and outdoor enthusiasts.
One of the most famous hiking routes around Lake Attersee is the Attersee circular trail: this leads around the entire lake over a length of approx. 48 kilometres and offers breathtaking views of the crystal-clear water and the surrounding mountains. The route can be hiked in several stages and is well marked throughout. There are numerous bathing opportunities and cosy inns along the way that invite you to take a break. By the way: it is also an excellent option to complete the circular route by bike!
For those who want to go higher, the Schoberstein in Weißenbach am Attersee offers an excellent hiking opportunity. The ascent to the 1,037 metre high summit, which takes around one and a half hours, is a little more challenging, but the effort is rewarded with a spectacular view over Lake Attersee and the Höllengebirge mountains. The path to the Schoberstein is well developed and leads through varied landscapes, from dense forests to rocky sections.
An absolute highlight for ambitious mountain sports enthusiasts is the Höllengebirge, a striking mountain range south of Lake Attersee. Numerous hiking trails lead through this area, including challenging routes such as the ascent from the Feuerkogel mountain station to the Großer Höllkogel, which at 1,862 metres is the highest peak in the Höllengebirge. This multi-hour summit tour requires a good level of fitness and surefootedness, but is rewarded with a magnificent view of the entire Salzkammergut.
There are also many easy hikes around Lake Attersee for families and less experienced hikers, such as the trail to the Hochplettspitze. This hike can be completed in around two hours and leads through a beautiful, varied landscape. Once at the top, hikers can look forward to a magnificent view of Lake Attersee and the surrounding mountains.
