When the lake summer slowly but surely draws to a close, the days get shorter, the air clearer and the evenings fresher, then the golden autumn season is not far away. Then the wonderful hiking trails that run through the entire Salzkammergut invite you to discover them.
One way to enjoy autumn around the lake to the full is to hike around Lake Attersee on the 90-kilometre long-distance hiking trail. The Attersee-Attergau long-distance hiking trail takes you uphill and downhill in four stages - or five if you prefer - through gentle hilly landscapes and light-flooded forests and across expansive meadows - with the lake always in view. For all hikers for whom the 90 kilometres of hiking around the lake are not enough, they can continue on the Salzkammergut BergeSeen Trail.
The autumn around Lake Attersee also has a special culinary theme every year, under which the regional businesses serve their guests special moments of indulgence. One special event is the Unterach Chestnut Festival. From chestnut beer to sliced chestnuts, everything revolves around this little delicacy. The reason for this: Unterach is home to a chestnut forest, which is also a wonderful place to hike through. The special thing about it is that here on Lake Attersee is the only area north of the Alps where sweet chestnuts ripen.
In three one-day stages, the Josef Pilgrimage Trail leads from Altmünster on the crystal-clear Traunsee to Weyregg on the turquoise-blue Attersee. On paths of ancient pilgrimage routes, along green mountain pastures and accompanied at every turn by a magnificent panorama, the route takes the form of a symbolic figure eight. Pilgrimage impulses along the way encourage you to see the essentials in life.

In the 1970s, Celtic burial mounds were discovered on the Koglberg in St. Georgen im Attergau. In 2006, the Kelten.Baum.Weg, a themed and adventure trail, was created to give visitors a better understanding of the special features of the Iron Age Latène culture, which flourished in the region around 450 BC. Starting in St. Georgen im Attergau, the trail winds its way through the forest on the Koglberg and offers the perfect autumn backdrop. At various adventure stations, hikers learn exciting facts about the Attergau Celts as they pass by. Guided tours and themed hikes also take place here until October.
The hike up the Schoberstein in Weißenbach is also a little more challenging. Hiking trail no. 820 starts opposite the Fachbergbrücke bridge and after around three and a half hours and 523 metres in altitude, you will have a wonderful view of the lake and the surrounding area. However, there are no refreshment stops along this route, so it is best to pack plenty of provisions and enjoy the snacks you have brought with you and the view over the autumnal, colourful landscape high above the Salzkammergut.
